The FGD brought together a diverse group of participants, including journalists, lawyers, and students from some of Pakistan’s most prominent academic institutions such as Government College University (GCU), Punjab University (PU), and Forman Christian College (FCCU).
The discussion proved to be highly insightful, with participants stressing the urgent need for a moratorium on the death penalty in Pakistan. They highlighted the major flaws in the justice system, including wrongful convictions, lack of fair trial guarantees, and prolonged judicial processes, which often exacerbate human rights violations and deepen injustices.
A strong consensus emerged among participants: Pakistan must take concrete steps towards justice system reforms and align with international human rights standards by moving away from capital punishment.
Speaking on the outcomes of the discussion, a representative of Redemption Pakistan stated:
“This Focus Group Discussion reflects the growing awareness and determination among Pakistan’s youth and professional communities to work towards a more just and humane society. The Last Mile Fellowship will be a milestone initiative to empower future leaders in human rights advocacy.” Said Aroon Arthur Director, Redemption, Pakistan.
The participants expressed their enthusiasm to join the upcoming fellowship program, recognizing it as a historic opportunity to collectively build momentum towards the abolition of the death penalty in Pakistan and to strengthen the culture of human rights across the country.
